Harpermania

In the days leading up to the Federal Election, Prime Minister Stephen Harper made a last minute campaign stop in Waterloo at Sports Systems Unlimited.  After drilling in some screws into hockey boards for a photo op, he addressed his supporters.
And then the media was whisked away in vans to a second location, an apple farm a 10 minute drive away, for yet another photo op.
It was an interesting experience to be a part of and see how it all goes down.  And also cool to be shooting with all the wire photographers.

Soccer

I developed a bit of a curse with weather and shooting high school sports.  The weather seemed to spite me nearly every assignment.  I arrived at the field with the sun shining and left completely drenched in the middle of a mini monsoon.  I then had to work the rest of the day in soaking wet jeans.  Nothing feels better than wet denim.

A Dogs Life

During my time at The Record I developed a bit of a pet beat.  I don't think I took one animal photo during my two years at Loyalist...but my pet photography career really took off in Waterloo.

On this assignment there were 100 dogs that were rescued from a puppy mill and distributed across humane societies across Ontario.  These poor little guys have had a hard knock life.

Saturday, April 16, 2011...one for the fridge.

As a new photojournalist the novelty of being published really hasn't worn off.  Saturday, April 16, 2011 was a pretty great day for me on this internship.  As a nervous, insecure intern it was pretty awesome, and startling, to see the front of every section with my photo on it!

Golfing Ref

I was assigned to photograph a University of Waterloo student who was both a golf champion an up and coming hockey official.  I wanted to try something to display this duality so I attempted a long single exposure where, in a pitch black room, I lit him once in his golf attire and then had him quickly change in the dark into his ref attire.

It took multiple attempts and I didn't feel like I quite pulled it off but I could only make the poor guy do this so many times.
